THE LIBRARY

The panelling is pine and dates from the 1720s and, as in the Entrance Hall, the paint was stripped in the 1920s.

The mantle is a later addition and it’s probable that the delicate wood carving of the chimney piece was inspired by the work of Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721).

Much of the furniture is Georgian mahogany.

The porcelain on the mantle is Chinese famille verte.

Above the fireplace wall are portraits of three generations of Tollemache children.  Elsie Raphael, Miss Raphael’s second sister, married Humphrey Tollemache in 1924 and the portrait of their two children, Jean and Michael, hangs above the fireplace.
